His name is well known and respected in the industry. Randy Kohrs’ work as producer of Jim Lauderdale has earned him some awards, among them a Grammy. As a multi-instrumentalist he has played Dobro on Dierks Bentley’s hit What Was I Thinking. But only interested fans know that Kohrs’ current release Quicksand is already his fifth solo CD.

He co-penned five of the thirteen tracks. The rest origins from respected songwriters the likes of Tom T. Hall or Webb Pierce or my old buddy Codie Prevost. Even you’re tempted to categorize this CD under Bluegrass when first listening, you better think again and use Kohrs’ own definition of Progressive Acoustic. It’s the instruments chosen and the way they’re played with perfection that makes this CD outstanding.

My favorites among Kohrs’ own songs are Devil Of The Trail and Die On The Vine. But also the covers are noteworthy. Especially the classic More About John Henry, written by Tom T. Hall.
