Surviving
a broken neck is already a gift. If you're a talented musician and songwriter
and can continue to write songs with deep going lyrics after such an accident,
it's an even bigger gift. Tommy Miles is doing what he did for decades: Writing
songs that touch the listener. Together with his longtime friends, Steve Tucker
and Spooner Oldham he formed Merlin Sights Records and backed up
by his band Harmony-n-Gritz he has put ten of these songs on his CD, Take
Me Back Biloxi.
You
can't categorize Tommy Miles' sound and that's probably just how he wants
it to be. The title track tells the story of how he got to move away from
the Mississippi Gulf Coast after a hurricane and moved to California. But
he'll always remember his home town. And these times at Senior High.
Two catchy tunes are Lonely Women Make Good Lovers and One Hand
On The Bottle. How he find his way "back" after many tragedies
in a fast moving life can be heard on I Wanna Meet My Sweet Jesus.
The
back cover of the CD shows an impressive picture of what Hurricane Camille
left over back in 1969, when it came over the Gulf Coast with winds up to
190 mph. It may not be totally accurate but I think if life takes you through
so many personal experiences and tragedies, the feelings and thoughts have
to flow into some sort of receptacle. And for Tommy Miles this receptacle
seem to be the songs he writes.
